宋代瓷器的发展（公元960年—1279年）无论从技术还是从风格角度来说都是中国艺术史上的一个里程碑。高温烧制的炻器——这也是宋瓷的主要品种——虽然已有差不多两千年的制作历史，但是直到宋代，它的物理特性和美学吸引才被充分认识和利用。瓷器不再因为粗糙和难以控制的特性排在金属器和矿物器之后，取而代之的是形制的标准，色泽的均匀，质感的细腻和光泽的润滑。
