The technical and stylistic development of ceramics in the Song dynasty (960-1279) is one of China’s unique artistic achievements. High-fired stonewares – the principal type of ceramics in the Song – had by then been made for some two thousand years, but it was only in the Song dynasty that both this material’s physical qualities and its aesthetic appeal were fully realized and inventively exploited. The rough and haphazard aspect which traditionally had made ceramics so obviously inferior to polished metals and minerals, gave way to precision of form, evenness of colour, smoothness of texture, and brilliance of sheen.
