Northern Wei dynasty, early 6th century Longmen cave temples, Henan province The sensitively rendered face and fluid lines of drapery in this low-relief carving are remarkably effective in evoking the spirit of a Buddhist monk. The monk may have been one of a pair, flanking a central image of Buddha, or part of a large procession of religious and secular figures.
