  • Transfigured Echoes: Recent Paintings by Liu Dan

The celebrated contemporary ink master, Liu Dan, has created ten new paintings to be exhibited at Eskenazi Limited to coincide with the opening of Frieze London and Asian Art in London. Four of the paintings are ambitious, large abstract landscapes, panoramic in scale, marked by energetic and textural brushwork. One in particular, Redefining Pleats of Matter, reflects Liu Dan’s life-long interest in Renaissance art and has been created in response to a Raphael drawing of Saint Benedict Receiving Maurus and Placidus. The subject of the six remaining paintings is scholars’ rocks, a traditional literati theme, which has been given a contemporary slant through Liu Dan’s exacting eye and meticulous brushwork.
