竹香筒管形,中高浮雕山峦层叠,仙云缭绕。刘晨、阮肇二人立于虬劲连理松下,一人伸臂指路,一人背药锄与药篮。两仙女从云中眺望,一人持如意。上下端各有木顶托,有凸榫与器身插接。竹材带丰满金色包浆。

这件竹香筒所描绘的是刘晨、阮肇入天台山的故事。汉明帝永平五年,刘晨、阮肇入天台山采药时在山中迷路。正当惶恐不安之时,他们发现了一棵桃树,吃了这棵树上的桃子以后,他们立刻变得精力充沛。他们继续行路,在蹚过一条小溪以后,他们在溪那头遇见了仙女。在仙女的挽留下,他们在仙境中度过了日日如春的半年。在最终返回故乡的时候,他们才发现在山中的这半年中,人间已经历了七辈人的更替。
这个故事最早见于唐代的《太平广记》,之后在元曲中被广为流传,并成为绘画和木版画的主题。1明清时期的竹刻艺术家受木版画的启发,在笔筒和香筒上刻画这个故事。1966年上海宝山顾村明朱守诚墓中出土过一件朱缨雕刻的刘阮入天台主题香筒,上带两人对弈的情景,现存上海博物馆。2
