2. Celadon-glazed Stoneware Bottle
Northern Song dynasty, 11th or early 12th century
Yaozhou kilns, Shaanxi province
Height: 22.2cm
Celadon-glazed grey stoneware bottle set on a low, everted foot-ring with bevelled edge, the pear-shaped body narrowing to a slender, waisted neck with flaring rim. The body is superbly carved with an undulating vine bearing four three-petalled blooms, alternately upright and pendant, surrounded by large trefoil leaves. The design is deftly and fluidly executed using a combination of incising, deep carving and combing to entirely fill the gently rounded body. The neck is decorated with two rows of loose petal lappets, one upright and the other pendant, contained within double lines. A glaze of rich olive tone covers the bottle, pooling to a deeper shade where the design has been carved out. The inside of the neck has pronounced throwing or turning rings and the base and underside of the foot-ring are unglazed, revealing the fine grey-bodied stoneware.
