Trees and mountains on gold and silver
by Li Huayi
Our autumn exhibition highlights eight specially commissioned works by the celebrated ink artist, Li Huayi. In these recent paintings, Li returns to an exploration of his favourite subject of nature, trees and mountains, featuring sweeping ink brushstrokes against striking gold- and silver-leaf silk backgrounds. For Li, ‘heaven and earth remain eternal constants, embodying the duality of yang and yin’ and in these paintings, he explores this essence, where ‘gold implies yang, while ink-black implies yin’.
