坂口宗云斋师从著名竹艺大师初代田边竹云斋（1877 —1937），成为他最出色的弟子之一。 1929 年，他成为首批参加日本政府主办的帝国艺术学院展览的两位竹艺家之一。 他提交的作品是一只现代风格的果盘，灵感来自水中月亮的倒影，并命名为《水月》，现藏于纽约大都会艺术博物馆。他的学生之一是竹艺家箕浦竹甫(1934—2010)。
